Extension descriptor (YAML)

Read, analyze, generate, and play MIDI files with SQL. Provides table functions for parsing Standard MIDI Files, scalar functions for note/frequency conversion, and macOS playback via AudioToolbox.

Compatibility Matrix

This table covers all DuckDB releases that have not reached end-of-life, including LTS releases, and shows the 2 most recent patch releases of each. Older patch releases are not listed, but the extension may be available for them as well.

Installing and Loading

INSTALL midi FROM community;

About midi

duckdb-midi brings MIDI file support to DuckDB. Parse, analyze, generate, and play Standard MIDI Files entirely from SQL.

Table Functions:

• read_midi(path) - All MIDI events as a table (note_on, note_off, control_change, meta, etc.)
• midi_notes(path) - Note-on/off pairs with duration, velocity, and note name
• midi_meta(path) - Meta events (tempo, time signature, key signature, track names)

Scalar Functions:

• midi_note_name(60) → 'C4'
• midi_note_number('C4') → 60
• midi_note_freq(69) → 440.0
• midi_bpm_to_uspqn(120.0) → 500000
• midi_uspqn_to_bpm(500000) → 120.0

Write / Generate:

• midi_write(path, notes[], durations[], velocities[], bpm) - Create MIDI from arrays
• midi_gen(path, preset) - Generate test MIDI (scale, chord, arpeggio, drum, chromatic)

Playback (macOS):

• midi_play(path) - Play MIDI file (blocks until finished)
• midi_stop() - Stop playback

Uses craigsapp/midifile for SMF parsing/writing and macOS AudioToolbox for playback.
